Working at Pederson Point
One of the North Pacific Seafoods, Inc. plants located in the Naknek area is known as Pederson Point. It sits on Bristol Bay and is 3.5 miles north of the village of Naknek, Alaska. With a population of about 680, Naknek is situated on Kvichak Bay, an arm of Bristol Bay. Bristol Bay is known as the “Red Salmon Capital of the World” as well as the gateway to Katmai National Park and Preserve. Due to its abundant red salmon runs, the first salmon cannery was built in Naknek Alaska in 1890. Naknek has remained a major red salmon center, with a strong runs to this day. Bristol Bay is a tundra area known for its broad tides lands, high brown cliffs with crowning greenery. The nearest commercial airport is in King Salmon, which is connected to Naknek by road and is located about 280 miles southwest of Anchorage.
The Pederson Point plant was built in the 1890s as a saltery and was later converted to a salmon canning operation. North Pacific Seafoods purchased the facility in 1983. Today, the plant processes salmon and salmon roe from mid-June until late July.
Room & Board: Employees are housed in shared rooms in dormitory style housing. Room and board (meals) are free to employees who complete the processing season. Employees who leave before the season ends pay $15 per day for housing and meals. Raingear is provided by the plant. While the plant provides bed linens, many employees prefer to bring a sleeping bag. Employees need to supply their own towels, clothing and toiletries.
Amenities: The plant is located 3.5 miles from Naknek. The plant office handles mail for employees, and there are first aid facilities, phones and a small store at the plant. In Naknek, there is a post office, bank, a couple of stores and restaurants, and internet access. There is a health clinic in Naknek, but no hospital facilities. It is important that medical and dental issues be handled before arriving in Naknek, as health care options are limited. Also, please bring all prescription medications needed for the duration of the season.
Transportation: Transportation between Anchorage, Alaska and the plant is provided by the company for employees who complete the season. If an employee leaves before the season ends, they are responsible for their own transportation back to Anchorage, and transportation expenses to the plant may be deducted from the last payroll check.
